Sunderland University Cinema
We were approached by Sony to design and commission all aspects of the installation, including 4 radio studios, 4 edit booths, 2 TV studios, 15 lecture room systems and auditorium.

IVC Media were approached by Sony to design, install and commission all aspects of the installation of a New Media Facility at the University of Sunderland.
As part of the Sony sponsored multi-million pound state of the art New Media Facility at the University of Sunderland, the requirement to produce and deliver the range and quality of all media types produced both in-house and externally for tuition and research was paramount.
The initial design brief from the university was to provide a space where students can present their work and review presentations by others. This seemed any easy task. However, we thought that a lot more could be achieved within the space, even with the limited budget available.
The Auditorium is designed to seat 217 people, and houses a 5.25M x 7M screen for delivery of all media sources. The impressive scale and quality of the media/img are further backed up by a powerful 7.1 surround sound Dolby Digital and DTS capable audio system, tuned to give the very best performance from all types of digital and analogue sources from mono to 7.1 channels.
At the front of house stands a fully equipped lectern with the ability to connect all types of mobile presentation devices and a touch panel controller designed to operate the entire system with ease, leaving the presenter to concentrate on the content of their delivery, rather than the technology required to deliver it.
This, together with lectern mounted radio microphones, leaves the presenter with a full array of technology at his disposal whilst the simple, intuitive design of the control system enables a presenter to operate the entire auditorium without instruction.
Display Equipment
The available sources comprise of: computer, laptop, DVD, VCR, DV, satellite, TV studio, minidisk, cassette, DAB, and video and computer connection points all of which are routed via a Kramer 16x8 RGBHV matrix switcher before feeding a Sony VPL-FX51 presentation projector.
The satellite and DVD sources also have a unique IVC Media designed unit that enables the component RGB signals to be taken from the scart, and fed via the router and into the computer input of the projector. This ensures the superior image quality required for any large display area which is not possible using more conventional video techniques.
Audio Equipment
Both analogue and digital, microphone and line audio signals are processed and routed to two Soundweb 9088ii processors for combining, distribution and enhancement. The individual channels are then routed to eleven Crown audio amplifiers capable of delivering over 12kw of audio power in to the auditorium through JBL drivers.
The speaker system comprises of three JBL 3632 towers behind the perforated screen, twelve 8340A surround drivers, and a 4642A dual 18Ó sub woofer driver unit.
Control
An AMX Netlinx system has been utilised for this auditorium along with the latest generation TP4 touch panel interface for displaying every element of control by very fluid, animated, icon driven representation. The panel allows the user to preview all sources prior to sending for presentation and also enables a full screen confidence monitor to keep the presenter in touch without the need to turn around.
Further control has been interfaced with the lighting system to ensure that a suitable viewing or presentation presets are called for each state.
Additional microphone plug in points and radio microphones have been provided for panel seminars, lectures and interactive participation from the audience.
In the design of this auditorium, IVC Media have created a presentation space far beyond the expectations of the university.
Since the opening in September, demand for the space from both within the university and from the local community bear testimony to the success we have achieved in not only meeting the initial design brief but in providing an exciting presentation space without equal in the area that the university can be proud of.
